Description:
Starting in Europe and then establishing themselves in New York City, Bulova holds a strong place in watchmaking history. Their vintage and Swiss made pieces displaying the marks of this heritage.
Featuring the precursor to modern quartz technology, this watch houses Bulova's proprietary 214 caliber tuning fork movement. The 214 Accutron movement is widely regarded as the world’s first electronic watch, utilizing a special tuning fork that vibrates at a specific frequency when an electric current passes through. This created a very subtle and unique humming sound and resulted in the second hand moving at an amazingly smooth 360 jumps pers second. This technology would go on to be the prototype for the modern quartz movement and alter the trajectory of watchmaking history. So notable were these watches in their heyday that they were used as official “Gifts of State” by the United States government. Additionally, railroad watches were timepieces that had mandatory requirements for certain rail companies or rail lines, such as a certain number of jewels in the movement to ensure reliability and accuracy, white only dials, and large legible numeric indices.
