Rare, Beautiful and Macabre! This book features the Edgar Allan Poe poem “The Raven” with original illustrations by Gustave Dore. Both poet and illustrator are world renowned for their unique and haunting visions. This first edition print was published in 1884 by Harper and Brothers, New York. Known as an “Elephant Folio” due to its large dimensions it measures 47 by 37cm. This publication was also Gustave Dore’s final work.

 

The book features 25 full page engravings with the images printed on heavy stock and the text on a lighter paper, alternating from a stanza on one page to the corresponding image on the next. Also included is a commentary of the poem by Edmund C. Steadman. The cover and reverse also feature beautiful Greek inspired Art-Nouveau artwork with some of the original gilt still visible on the cover.

Very Good Condition.

Cover, rear cover and spine all attached and intact. Fair amount of bumps to corners and soiling/stain on front cover. All Pages accounted for. Some spots on pages and small tears/soiling throughout. Overall very good for age and scarcity.
